about moonessa

singer · songwriter · recording artist

Moonessa is a Canadian-born singer and songwriter with Hungarian roots. Born in Ontario and raised in Caledonia by Hungarian immigrant parents, she grew up in a family that moved frequently. Time spent in Canada, California and Hungary forms part of a life shaped by movement and connections across borders.

She created the name Moonessa with her father, inspired by her fascination with the moon, Greek mythology and goddess imagery. The moon has been part of her personal imagery since childhood, a symbol she has carried into her identity as an artist.

Her songwriting moves between lived experience and imagination. She draws on relationships and the things she is navigating, while also turning poetry, short stories and imagined situations into songs. Sometimes, a story she has written becomes something she can relate to later in life. Her influences include Lana Del Rey, the Beatles and Nirvana.

Her collaborations include Once Upon a Time with Max Oazo, Poison with Qodes, Boom Boom with Nexeri and DJ Antonio, and Gone with Nigel Stately. Once Upon a Time, inspired by a high-school sweetheart, was among her early collaborations with Max Oazo, whose music she admired.
